Renewable Energy Int. Limited

Renewable Energy Int. Limited (REI) is a renewable energy company that was established in 2009 to take advantage of a fundamental change in the way countries achieve energy independence and security. Having assembled a strong team with extensive experience in the industry, REI focuses on developing onshore wind power opportunities by acquiring and developing greenfield and early development sites and guiding these projects through to issuance of the building permit or planning permission. Initially the geographic focus was on Northern Ireland, Poland and Bulgaria but expansion is already underway in other European countries.

Given the competitive nature and complexity of the onshore wind market, the management team is the key asset required to achieve success in this sector. Not only is it important to fully understand the current local and national regulatory regimes, management must also understand the electric grid capacity and shortfalls, as well as how to manage and co-ordinate complex projects with activities ranging from soil testing, to bird studies, to wind mast design and wind farm planning. Most importantly, management must be able to cultivate relationships along each step in the process – from specialist advisors, to local council officials, to local farmers, and management at the national grid. This requires key individuals with a combination of entrepreneurial temperament, patience with bureaucratic procedures, and technical understanding. REI has identified just such a team in all of the countries where it maintains a presence.

At the start of 2011, REI had a portfolio in excess of 800 MW and growing. The first building permit is expected in Q2 2012 for a 55 MW wind farm in Northwest Poland. This should be followed shortly thereafter by two more Polish parks. In Bulgaria, REI plans to combine wind and solar assets wherever feasible, and is moving forward with a number of qualified sites.
